FU is turning out to be a fun as fuck
project to work on. I think the gear needed for people to communicate
is nearly complete. Here’s what we got:
- Mailing lists
- Mailing list archives with
several of the locals already with good starter memberships. Boston=8, NYC=16,
Toronto=3, San Francisco=3, Atlanta=2.
- Very active IRC channel with tons of crazy chatter. While a lot of it
is seemingly off-topic, it shows everyone is itching to get going.
- Boston and NYC are planning short meetings tonight.
- Boston and NYC are planning their first newbie show for September 3rd.
- People from Toronto are talking about flying in for the NYC show.
- Every local can have its own mailing list, just ask.
- A full MoinMoin wiki for everyone to
collaborate on their ideas and locals. There’s already several locals
with complete pages. Yes it’s password protected. Any list password you
have will get you in.
- A total of 150 subscribers to the converse list
This is going very well too. The choice to use simple tech of just a
basic site, a mailing list system, IRC, and now a wiki has been crucial.
I think another thing that’s happened is, because the site is on its own
domain and doesn’t use services from other vendors, people feel that it’s
more for them. I’m starting to formulate this idea that when a group puts
their mailing list on say yahoo or google they kind of dilute the group’s
identity.
We’re now going to start working on the podcast system. If anyone has
suggestions on good podcast practices let me know.
